A one-on-one interview
with OC's very own
AmeriKan Made
(Ryan Cherney from AM and Josh from
YBB)
YourBestBet:
Lets get your name, age, where your from and what you do in the band? Ryan: Ryan - 25 - raised in Huntington
Beach, CA - bass / mouth
Ryan: Born
in a hospital in bellflower, where I remained until I was big enough to leave the hospital and go to my home in
HB YourBestBet:How long has Amerikan Made been together for? Ryan: Umm... that's
kind of a strange question because Josh and I have been doing this band since 96 or so, maybe 95 I forget - but have gone
through different members until about 1 year ago. Now we have the band together that I believe will stick till the end. YourBestBet:
Who came up with the name Amerikan Made, and what does the name mean to you? Ryan: I came up with the
name, I guess it just moreless is the best way we can discribe ourselves and the people we've grown up with. Ryan:
Some have been in the military, some have been put in jail, some are "climbing the coporate ladder". YourBestBet:
So you would say the name is a life change or matter that have happend in time? Ryan: No i'd just say
that's the one similarity everyone that I know has... we're all amerikans - some successful some not YourBestBet: What
made you want to be in a band? Ryan: My family put me in music when I was real young. I
played little league and all that shit too but music just stuck. I liked it a little more than everything else. Ryan: I
searched hard for people to play music with, it was weird... I had a really hard time finding people to jam with, and
more specifically people that had "chemistry" or whatever you wanna call it with me. YourBestBet: Have
have you ever played any other instruments other than the bass? Ryan: ya... I started with piano-
it's always been my foundation... I was actually alot better when I was 20-22, havn't kept up on it like I should,
but ya- I wrote alot of songs on the piano and transfered them over. YourBestBet: Were you self
taught or did you take lessons on the piano? Ryan: No, my parents put me in piano lessons when I
was like 7 or something... I stayed with it till like 10, stopped, got back into from like 13-15, stopped... got into
it heavily from like 19-22, and I havn't gone for a few years YourBestBet: One question comes to
mind the flag you use to wear at shows. What was with that and why dont you wear it any more? Ryan: It's
still around... i'm waiting for a time to take it out of retirement. Oddly enough I was alot more political in those
days than now (strange because the last few years seem to be the hot season for politically charged conversation) I dunno...
havn't felt the urge to bust it out, I'm more less waiting for something to set me off- get me pist again YourBestBet:
with all these different genres for band like pop punk, punk, and political punk what would you say Amerikan Made would be?
Ryan: Probably a little of all of those, with a side order of metal. YourBestBet: With songs like misery,
hate, and amerikan made, what would you say you like to play the most? Ryan: I think we're a lot
harder than all those pop punk bands... but you'll hear a softy from us once in a while, so you can call the minority of our
songs "pop punk" if you wish. Ryan: the most.. depends on the crowd. That's the best answer I can
give for that... i like em all. YourBestBet: Where would you say alot of your fan base is from?
Ryan: It's been growing quite a bit over the last 6 months or so, but I'd say Orange County, with the
heart of our fans in Huntington. YourBestBet: Where did you find Pat, your drummer, and how did you approach
him to be in your band? Ryan: He was a friend of Billy... who is no longer with the band... they
played in a band a long time ago together called Corruption. Billy just called him up and said he had a project worth
checking out. Pat said he'd have to check it out after his tour with FEAR, and when he got back Billy was in jail, so Josh
and I went and jammed with him. Apparently he was into what we were doing and joined. YourBestBet:
If you could choose five bands to play a gig with who would they be and why? Ryan: That's a hard question
because bands I like aren't necessarily bands that would do our band the most good playing with. If I could choose
to do a gig with my favorite bands, it'd probably be something like- Bad Religion, D.I., NOFX, Propagandhi, and Slayer. YourBestBet:
Where do you see Amerikan Made in five years? Ryan: Either hometown hero's who play local gigs for fun
OR coming to a town near YOU. YourBestBet: What can we expect from the new album your releasing in the
year? Ryan: Faster and more aggressive than anything we've ever done... also very catchy, we've had nothing
but good feedback with the few songs we've put out for promotion. I think the songs that people have heard are more
radio friendly... and when people get the full length they'll hear us really bust out the artillery we had been holding back.
YourBestBet: Are we going to hear any of the new stuff at shows before the album comes out? Ryan:
Ya, we've been playing most of it since march. Getting ready and all. YourBestBet: If you could have
your choice of any record label what label do you think amerikan made would choose? Ryan : Someone who
would not try to make marketing decisions with us and let us do our thing, while also taking the time to make sure they give
us the promotion and backing we need to stand a chance in a fucked industry. Until then we'll stand on our own two feet.
YourBestBet: What advice could you give to the new up incoming bands out there. Ryan:
Do it because you love it...or pack your bags. Ryan: . YourBestBet: I'll wrap
this up with one question, What would you like to say to your fans out there in this world up drunk punks? Ryan:
fuck man Ryan: I'm trying to think of how to put it into words Ryan: "hedup"
Ryan: . YourBestBet: ok thank you Ryan from Amerikan Made for this interview and
see you at your next show.
